Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley has expressed confidence that the United Kingdom understands the Virgin Islands’ position following the first round of constitutional negotiations held in the Territory.

The talks took place from July 13 to 16, with Dr. Wheatley leading the Virgin Islands delegation and Nicholas Wareham heading the UK team.

“The deliberations between our respective negotiating teams were constructive and focused on gaining a shared understanding of The Virgin Islands’ constitutional proposals,” Dr. Wheatley said.

He added, “I am pleased with the discussions and confident that The Virgin Islands’ position is well understood by the UK.”

The Premier said the first round has paved the way for negotiations to continue in London in next month.

The Territory is seeking changes aimed at modernising governance, strengthening accountability and securing greater self-government.

The current Constitution came into force in 2007. The negotiations are expected to conclude by the end of 2026, with agreed amendments targeted for enactment in 2027.
