The Virgin Islands is strengthening its ability to prevent and respond to public health threats by improving coordination among agencies responsible for protecting the Territory's ports of entry.

According to the Government Information Service (GIS), the initiative was advanced through a Port Health Stakeholder Engagement Meeting hosted by the Ministry of Health and Social Development's Environmental Health Division, bringing together representatives from H.M. Customs, the Department of Immigration, the BVI Airports Authority, the BVI Ports Authority and the Department of Disaster Management.

Minister for Health and Social Development Vincent Wheatley said the Territory's ports play a vital role in safeguarding public health, particularly as the Virgin Islands relies heavily on tourism and trade.

“As a Territory that depends heavily on tourism and trade, our ports of entry serve as critical points of connection with the rest of the world. They are also important points of protection,” the Minister said.

He added that a strong Port Health system allows authorities to identify health risks early, respond quickly and reduce the spread of communicable diseases and other public health threats.

According to GIS, during the meeting, stakeholders reviewed the Territory's existing Port Health programme and discussed ways to strengthen disease surveillance, public health risk assessments, emergency communications, traveller health management and inter-agency coordination.

Participants also identified several priority areas for improvement, including contingency planning, isolation facilities, staff training, emergency communication protocols and joint simulation exercises to strengthen emergency response capabilities.

Minister Wheatley said effective preparedness depends on collaboration among all agencies.

“Public health risks do not respect borders. Our ability to respond effectively depends on strong partnerships, clear communication, coordinated action and a shared understanding of each agency's role in protecting the health of our Territory,” he said.

The Environmental Health Division said it will continue working with partner agencies to strengthen the Virgin Islands' Port Health Contingency Plan and expand collaboration with other organisations that support border health protection.
