Political commentator Claude Skelton Cline has corrected his claim that Myron Walwyn met with Melvin “Mitch” Turnbull about joining the People’s Leadership Movement (PLM), acknowledging a “grave misunderstanding” on his part.
In a statement issued today, October 8, Skelton Cline said his remarks on Honestly Speaking on Tuesday, October 6, were based on a conversation with a source.
“After further review, I have come to understand that there was a grave misunderstanding regarding the details of the conversation on my part,” he stated.
He said he wanted to correct his previous statement to ensure listeners received accurate information.
“Hon. Myron Walwyn did not meet with the Hon. Member of the Second on the PLM matter,” he clarified.
As previously reported, Skelton Cline had claimed that Walwyn tried to persuade Turnbull to join the PLM with him, that Turnbull was promised a deputy leadership position and that he rejected the approach.
Walwyn denied the allegation in an October 7 statement and challenged Skelton Cline and his associates to provide proof. He accused the commentator of manufacturing claims about him, questioned his commitment to accuracy and said his focus remained on serving the Sixth District.
Turnbull also rejected the claim on the NDP’s radio programme that evening, saying: “Hon. Walwyn and I had no such conversation about joining PLM and Hon. Vanterpool.” The Second District Representative and NDP deputy chairman called for an end to the use of his name to create confusion and reaffirmed his commitment to the party, adding that Walwyn remained a member as far as he was aware.
In his correction, Skelton Cline took responsibility for the content of Honestly Speaking and pledged to correct information that proved inaccurate, saying the integrity of the programme and its listeners were equally important to him.
“I appreciate the opportunity to address this matter in my own voice prior to my return on Tuesday, God’s willing,” he stated.
