Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley has pledged to select a developer and begin work on the long-delayed Prospect Reef redevelopment before his administration’s term ends.

Elections are constitutionally due in 2027.

Dr. Wheatley said the project was delayed after the board became non-functional when the tenure of several members expired following the death of its chairman. Cabinet recently approved the board’s reconstitution, clearing the way for the Request for Proposals (RFP).

“I expect for the RFP to be issued over the next couple weeks,” he said, adding that the competitive process should take no more than six to eight weeks.

The Premier insisted the project was “not at square one”, explaining that companies capable of undertaking the redevelopment had already been identified through an expression of interest process.

“My goal is, before this administration comes to a close, to make sure that we have a tenderer selected and that we can start the work that needs to be done,” Dr. Wheatley stated.

The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government has faced heavy criticism for failing to get the project underway and has been warned that it will not be completed before the next elections.
