Political commentator Claude Skelton Cline is calling for an immediate suspension of all government vehicle purchases, arguing that the Territory can no longer afford the growing costs associated with maintaining a large fleet during challenging economic times.
Speaking on his radio programme on June 16, Skelton Cline said government vehicles appear to be everywhere and questioned whether taxpayers are receiving value for money.
“I will call for a complete moratorium of government buying any more vehicles,” he stated.
He also raised concerns about what he described as the misuse of government vehicles, claiming they are frequently seen parked at grocery stores, rum shops and other locations outside of official business hours.
“I am seeing all kinds of government vehicles everywhere, every time of the day, by the grocery store, by the rum shop...hours of the night,” he said.
According to Skelton Cline, the issue extends beyond the purchase price of the vehicles, noting that government is also responsible for fuel, maintenance and other operating costs.
“How are we affording this stuff? In the best of times, okay, I back off. But we're not in the best of times right now,” he remarked.
He argued that government should immediately stop acquiring additional vehicles and implement stricter oversight measures to ensure public assets are being used appropriately.
“We need to bring a hard stop to the purchase across the board of any more vehicles and a system that is enforceable in place for the proper use, utility of these vehicles,” he said.
Skelton Cline urged residents to join him in pressing government to review its vehicle policy and spending priorities amid ongoing economic pressures.
