New policies aimed at making homeownership more attainable for Virgin Islanders are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, according to Premier and Minister of Finance Hon. Dr Natalio Wheatley.
Speaking during his State of the Territory Address on June 9, Wheatley said government is advancing an affordable housing initiative to address growing concerns about access to housing and land ownership.
“Too many Virgin Islanders feel homeownership is moving out of reach,” Wheatley said. “That is why Government is advancing an Affordable Housing initiative to create stronger pathways to homeownership through Crown lands, partnerships and innovative housing solutions.”
“And you will be hearing more about that as we pass policies in the coming weeks regarding that,” he added.
The Premier said housing remains a critical issue for many Virgin Islanders and stressed that homeownership should remain within reach for local families.
The initiative comes as government continues efforts to address long-standing land matters through the recently constituted Crown Lands Management Board, which is expected to advance issues affecting communities including Anegada, North Sound, Hawks Nest, Nibbs Estate and Virgin Gorda.
Wheatley also pointed to reforms to the Stamps (Amendment) Act, which he said have already helped more than 120 Belonger families save on property transactions, creating greater opportunities for homeownership and generational wealth.
The planned affordable housing initiative is expected to build on those efforts by expanding access to housing through Crown lands and other partnerships.
