The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Marine Unit used a recent maritime safety forum to highlight several challenges affecting the territory's waters, including vessel safety, thefts and the under-reporting of incidents.
The Marine Unit recently participated in the Maritime Safety Engagement Meeting hosted by the Marine Safety Investigation and Reporting Authority (MSIRA) under the Premier's Office.
During the event, Sergeant Jack and Woman Police Constable Billingy delivered a presentation titled Maritime Offences and Strengthening Industry Cooperation, focusing on the need for greater compliance, awareness and collaboration across the maritime sector.
The officers outlined a number of concerns facing the industry, including safe vessel operation, enforcement challenges, dinghy and tender theft, legislative gaps, risk management during major public events and the continued under-reporting of maritime incidents.
The RVIPF said the presentation underscored the importance of stronger cooperation among stakeholders to help maintain safe and secure waters throughout the Virgin Islands.
The Marine Unit reaffirmed its commitment to working with industry partners and the wider community to enhance maritime safety, protect lives and property and preserve the territory's marine environment.
The unit also thanked Chief Marine Accident Investigator Jerome Padmore for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to the engagement.
