Students recently gained a closer look at the important role waste management plays in protecting public health and the environment through an educational presentation hosted by the Department of Waste Management.

The session introduced students to the territory's waste management system, explaining that the process extends far beyond garbage collection and includes the transportation, processing, recycling and safe disposal of waste generated by homes, schools, businesses and communities.

Students also learned about the responsibilities of Sanitation Officers and the importance of proper waste disposal. Discussions focused on the dangers of littering and the impact poor waste management practices can have on public health, the environment and overall quality of life.

A highlight of the presentation was a live demonstration by Sanitation Officer Dexter Gabriel, who showed students how a garbage truck operates and the process involved in collecting and transporting waste.

Director of Waste Management Brian Davis said the hands-on experience gave students a practical understanding of the work required to keep communities clean.

β€œThe key message shared with students was that waste management is much more than collecting garbage. It is an essential public service that protects public health, preserves the environment, and supports sustainable development,” Davis said.

Students were also introduced to career opportunities in waste management and environmental health, learning about the various professions that contribute to cleaner, safer and more sustainable communities.

The department said the initiative also sought to encourage appreciation for Sanitation Officers, who serve on the frontlines of public health by helping to ensure safe and healthy environments for residents across the Virgin Islands.
