The Virgin Islands is mourning the loss of beloved dance instructor and founder of Firebird Performing Arts Studio, Sarah Penney, who died on Sunday, June 21, just hours before her dance company was scheduled to celebrate a major milestone.
BVI Platinum News understands that Penney was found unresponsive at her home on Sunday.
Her sudden passing has sent shockwaves throughout the Territory, particularly among the hundreds of students, parents, performers, and community members whose lives she touched through her work in the performing arts and environmental advocacy.
Penney's Firebird Performing Arts Studio was set to host its highly anticipated 10th Anniversary Showcase at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).
The production was expected to feature 112 performers, the majority of whom were children and young people who had trained under her guidance over the years.
Following news of her passing, the anniversary event was cancelled.
For more than a decade, Penney dedicated herself to nurturing talent, building confidence, and creating opportunities for young people to express themselves through dance and performance.
Through Firebird Performing Arts Studio, she helped shape the lives of countless youth and adults, many of whom found not only a creative outlet but also mentorship, discipline, and a sense of belonging under her leadership.
Her contributions extended far beyond the stage.

Penney was a former Director of Green VI and was widely recognized as a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability.
She played a leading role in promoting recycling initiatives and championing efforts aimed at preserving and protecting the Virgin Islands' natural environment.
Her commitment to community development saw her actively involved in numerous projects designed to improve the Territory and inspire positive change.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from former students, parents, colleagues, and community leaders, many describing Penney as a compassionate mentor, visionary leader, and tireless advocate for both the arts and the environment.
Penney leaves to mourn her husband, son, extended family, friends, members of the Firebird Performing Arts family, and the many individuals whose lives she impacted through her years of dedicated service to the Virgin Islands.
BVI Platinum News extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, students, and the entire Firebird Performing Arts community during this difficult time.
