A day of explosive batting and high-scoring encounters highlighted the Nation Cup T20 action at the Greenland Ground on Sunday, June 21, as Dominica and Jamaica registered impressive victories over Grenada and the British Virgin Islands respectively.
In the opening match of the day, Dominica produced a commanding batting display to defeat Grenada by seven wickets, successfully chasing 191 in just 17 overs.
Grenada, after electing to bat, posted a competitive 190 for seven from their 20 overs, built around an unbeaten 84 from Rodney Marryshow, who struck 10 boundaries and four sixes from 66 deliveries. Derrol Redhead provided late acceleration with a blistering 47 off just 19 balls, including six sixes.
Dominica’s bowlers were led by Trent Olive, who delivered an excellent spell of three wickets for just 16 runs from his four overs, while Chabilall Itwaru supported with two wickets.
However, the target proved insufficient as Dominica’s top order unleashed a powerful response. Gary Prince smashed 68 from only 25 balls, blasting six fours and six sixes, while captain Marvin Robinson remained unbeaten on 65 from 45 deliveries. The pair shared a match-defining 114-run partnership as Dominica reached 193 for three with three overs remaining.
The second encounter saw Jamaica overcome the British Virgin Islands by four wickets in another entertaining run chase.
The BVI, after winning the toss and choosing to bat, were dismissed for 171 in 19.4 overs. A rapid opening stand set the platform as Sylvester Mitchel hammered 42 from 22 balls with seven fours and two sixes, while Feris Pope added 19 from just 10 deliveries. Dennis Tyson contributed a valuable 32 from 21 balls, and Brent Defreitas finished strongly with an unbeaten 26 from 11 balls, including three sixes.
Jamaica’s bowling attack was shared among Carl Fraser and Kelvin Lewis, who each claimed three wickets, while Jerome Morris and Ameri Hinds took two wickets apiece.
In response, Jamaica recovered from early setbacks through a brilliant counterattack from Shelan Isidore with unbeaten 57 from just 17 deliveries and featured seven towering sixes. Wayne Richards added 42 from 34 balls as Jamaica raced to 173 for six in only 16.5 overs.
The BVI had moments of hope with Dennis Tyson claiming three wickets for 20 runs and Jagnarine Persaud taking two wickets, but Jamaica’s aggressive late assault carried them over the line.
