Fifth District Representative and Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Kye Rymer, has expressed profound sorrow over the fatal shooting of K'moi Walters, describing the killing as a "senseless act of violence" that has cast a shadow over Virgin Islands Day celebrations.
In a statement issued on Monday July 6 via his Facebook page, Rymer said the Territory awoke to heartbreaking news on what should have been a day of pride and celebration.
"Today is meant to be a day to celebrate our history, culture, and the pride we share as Virgin Islanders. Instead, a family is grieving the unimaginable loss of a son, loved one, friend, and proud father to his son, Kyrie," he said.
Rymer extended his condolences to Walters' mother, Tasha, his family and everyone affected by the tragedy.
The District Five representative lamented the loss of a young life filled with promise, saying Walters had dreams and ambitions that would now never be realised.
"K'moi had a full life ahead of him. Like so many of our young people, he had dreams to pursue, aspirations to fulfill, and a future of endless possibilities. It is heartbreaking that those opportunities were stolen in such a cruel and senseless act of violence," Rymer added.
He also appealed to members of the public to assist the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force with its homicide investigation, stressing that even the smallest piece of information could prove crucial.
"As the Representative for the Fifth District, I urge anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force in their investigation. Justice for K'moi and his family depends on the willingness of those who know something to speak up," he said.
He added, "May God wrap His loving arms around K'moi's family during this painful time, grant them strength in the days ahead, and bring comfort to all who mourn. May He also guide our Territory toward peace, healing, and a renewed commitment to safeguarding every precious life."
Walters died after being shot in the Huntums Ghut area during the early hours of Monday. Police have since launched a homicide investigation and are appealing for anyone with information to contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit or Crime Stoppers as investigations continue.
